2026 Strategy: Prepping Your Fleet for the Spring Surge

In Kentucky, we know better than to trust a sunny day in February. We’re in that window where one morning it’s a hard freeze and by lunch, you’re shedding your jacket. But while the weather is indecisive, the calendar isn't. The "Spring Surge" is coming, and if you wait until the ground thaws to think about your tires, you’re already behind.

At Bill Morgan Tire, we’ve been through enough seasons to know that a little bit of foresight in late winter prevents a mountain of headaches in May. If you want to keep your fleet profitable and your downtime to a minimum this year, here is your 2026 Spring Strategy.

1. Master the "Spring Thaw" Pressure Check

Rapidly changing temperatures are a tire’s worst enemy. According to TireRack.com for every 10-degree drop in temperature, you can lose about a pound of pressure. When we’re swinging from 20-degree nights to 60-degree days, your tire pressure is on a roller coaster.

The Strategy: Implement a strict, weekly "Cold" pressure check. Checking your pressure after a long haul when the tires are hot won't give you an accurate reading. Check them in the morning before they hit the road. Consistent inflation is the single most effective way to prevent premature shoulder wear and heat-related blowouts. Don't let a fluctuating thermometer deflate your fuel economy.

2. Plan Your Pull-Points (Don’t Run 'Em to the Ropes)

When the spring rains hit, the last place you want to be is in a slick field or on a greasy interstate with "bald" tires. But beyond the safety risk, running your tires into the ground is a financial killer.

The Strategy: Set firm pull-points now. Your tire’s casing is its most valuable asset. If you run that tire until the cords are showing, you’ve just turned a high-quality candidate for our retreading facility into a piece of scrap rubber. By pulling your tires slightly early (before they are "legally" bald) you guarantee a successful Bill Morgan Tire retread.

Think of it this way: pulling a tire at 4/32” or 6/32” isn't "wasting" tread; it’s an investment in the next life of that tire. Protect your casings now, and you’ll save thousands by the time harvest rolls around.

The Bottom Line

The road from winter to spring is full of potholes, mud, and unpredictable shifts. You can’t control the weather or the price of fuel, but you can control how your rubber meets the road.

If you need a hand auditing your fleet or want to get those casings into our retread shop before the rush hits, give us a holler. We’ve been keeping the Bluegrass rolling since 1985, and we’re ready to help you crush it in 2026.
